Artist: Walter Bengtsson (1927–1998)
Year: 1972
Material/technique: Copper fountain
Location: Gamla badhusparken (the Old Bathhouse Park), west bank of the Lidan River
This sculptural fountain depicting a bird held in a human hand is placed in the strip of parkland between Älvgatan and the Lidan River. The bird not rendered realistically but rather belongs to the artist’s own imaginative world. Several human-like figures can be seen standing alongside the bird.
The title of the sculptural fountain is derived from the Swedish proverb “Better a bird in the hand than ten in the forest” (English equivalent: “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush”).
The fountain was donated by Lidköpings Savings Bank in conjunction with the 300th anniversary of the New Town in 1970. Unveiled in 1972.
